158 two-course meals

Celebrating Refugee Week

At the start of Refugee Week Leila’s Kitchen in Hebden Bridge served 158 pre-ordered 2-course lunches. Leila’s Kitchen is a family run business. Shortly after starting the café it was flooded like many other businesses in Hebden Bridge. Then came the coronavirus which forced them to close and then only do takeaways.

The event with the 158 meals was organised jointly with Together We Grow, a community group that supports refugees and asylum seekers. The group has existed for five years and their activities have expanded a lot since the start.

Leila and Sourena of Leila’s Kitchen said: “We would like to thank all the people who ordered a two-course meal for the 15th June. We are sorry we had to put a cap on how many orders we could take and therefore had to disappoint some people who also wanted to order a meal. Whilst keeping the usual high quality food we wanted to make sure we could have everything ready for lunch time.”

Laura Beesley, the chair of Together We Grow, said: “It has been great working with Leila’s Kitchen organising this event. We had never imagined that so many people would take part in this celebration of Refugee Week. It shows that we live in a caring community.”
